Year 1

Welcome to Beetles & Ladybirds

Welcome back!

We hope you had a relaxing and enjoyable summer break out in the glorious sunshine and you are now ready to start Year 1.

During the first few weeks of term, we will be focusing on the importance of ‘diversity’, by learning about famous musicians . We will focus on…

For the rest of Autumn term, our exciting topic is ‘Once upon a time’, giving us a fantastic opportunity to share many different traditional tales and practice using some wonderful storytelling language! The two books that we will learn and base our fiction and non-fiction writing on are: The Enormous Turnip and Goldilocks and the Three Bears. In Maths, we will be learning to count up to 20 and beyond, as well as using this number knowledge in simple addition and subtraction. We will explore different everyday materials and their uses in Science, and apply this knowledge when sewing and decorating our own teddy hand puppets in DT.

Please ensure that the children are reading their books every evening. The children will be given new reading books every Wednesday and Friday if they are in Red- Orange group and every Friday if they are in Yellow group. We will be setting Maths homework on Seesaw in Autumn Term every Friday. We will send out the children’s Seesaw codes when they return in September.

We look forward to working in partnership with all Year 1 parents. We will be using MarvellousMe to communicate, so please make sure you are signed up. Please ask us for a code if you do not have one. You can also contact us using our class email addresses.

These books are read as class texts over the course of the year to encourage positive and guided discussion of the protected characteristics. At Westfield, we strive to create an environment where children can share their opinions and ask questions.
