Year 1

Welcome to Beetles & Ladybirds

Welcome to the Summer Term of Year 1!

We do hope you were able to have a safe and relaxing Easter break, and enjoyed getting outside on the lighter, brighter days.

Our new topic this term is ‘Kings and Queens’. We are going to be learning some amazing facts about the British Royal Family, and also about monarchies around the world. Our new story texts in Literacy are called ‘The King’s pants’ and ‘The Cook and the King’, which are always loved by all!

Other activities include royal portrait paintings in Art, preparing a fresh salad for a royal banquet in DT, and holding our very own Royal banquet. We are also very lucky to be going on a school trip to Windsor Castle, to see the real home of a monarch. We cannot wait to get started!

In Science, we will be learning about plants, which includes carrying out a seed growing investigation, and other fun practical activities across the term. Our athletics training in PE will soon wear off any extra energy! As well as this, we really recommend keeping active as much as possible outside of school and getting some fresh air every day.

Our Year 1 Phonics Screening Check will be going ahead on the week commencing 10th June 2024, so reading will be a high priority in school, and we thank you for your continued reading efforts at home.

We hope you enjoy your last few months in Year 1 and we cannot wait to see your smiley faces again as we return. If you have any questions, concerns or worries about anything do not hesitate to contact us on our class email accounts.

Take care and keep up the hard work,

Mrs Carey and Mrs Dearden

These books are read as class texts over the course of the year to encourage positive and guided discussion of the protected characteristics. At Westfield, we strive to create an environment where children can share their opinions and ask questions.
