Home Learning
Home Learning
At Westfield Primary School, we believe that learning should be meaningful, enjoyable and enriching. Home learning, rather than traditional viewed "homework", plays a valuable role in supporting children’s learning throughout their primary years.
Educational research shows that home learning is most effective when it focuses on practice and rehearsal, helping children to consolidate what they have learned in school. We also recognise how precious family time is, and we want every child to enjoy the freedom and joy of childhood. Our approach ensures pupils have time to rehearse key ideas while still having space for play, creativity and rest.
Home learning also nurtures important lifelong learning skills such as self‑discipline, independence, organisation and time‑management. It offers families a chance to stay connected with their child’s learning journey.
Home learning is a partnership between teacher, pupil and parent. We expect pupils to engage positively and give their best effort.
Teachers will:
· provide a home learning timetable and clear expectations on Seesaw or Showbie as appropriate
· set tasks that are appropriate to the age and stage of the children
· focus on practising essential skills to build confidence and independence
· include tasks that link to class learning (e.g. pre‑reading, priming tasks for new topics, retrieval quizzes)
· use a blended approach with both books/ paper and Seesaw/Showbie
How Can You Help?
Parents and carers play a key supportive role. Direct instruction or correcting every mistake is not necessary—instead, aim to be a monitor, not an enforcer. Work alongside your child, help them reflect on their learning and celebrate their effort.
· Encourage your child to set goals and take ownership of their learning.
· Focus on motivation: praise effort and allow children to complete tasks independently so they feel a sense of achievement.
· Help your child create a calm, simple timetable and routines that support effective learning.
· Provide guidance that helps them manage their time, focus and emotions, strengthening their ability to regulate their own learning.
