Year 6
Welcome back!
We hope that you all had a restful and relaxing summer holiday!
Year 6 is going to be the busiest year yet at Westfield! We have lots of work to do to
prepare our children for their SATs, and for life at secondary school and beyond. It is vital
that all children are supported to complete their reading, times tables and spellings. Each
week, we will provide optional Maths and English homework via Seesaw.
We will be beginning our year with our annual Diversity Week by looking at a people who have
inspired us. We have chosen Sir Kevin Sinfield – who showed tremendous kindness and
empathy to support his friend who had been diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease - and
Greta Thunberg – who became famous for helping bring global attention to environmental
issues.
Our topic this term is ‘The World at War: in the trenches!’ We will be learning all about both
world wars, with a larger focus on WW2; most of our lessons will have a link with this. For
example, in our science, we will be looking at light and electricity as it links beautifully to the
war and how blackouts were a necessary part. In Maths, we will spend the first part of the
term revising and consolidating key concepts before extending our knowledge further.
We are looking forward to working closely with parents this year. We will provide
information about the upcoming SATs, and will always be available on our class email
addresses: falconsclass@westfield.surrey.sch.uk, hawksclass@westfield.surrey.sch.uk.
We look forward to working with you and your children during this academic year. If you
have any concerns or worries about anything, just let us know!
Wishing you and your children a great first term in Year 6!
Mrs Phillips (Hawks class) and Miss Neale (Falcons class)

These books are read as class texts over the course of the year to encourage positive and guided discussion of the protected characteristics. At Westfield, we strive to create an environment where children can share their opinions and ask questions.
