Welcome to Penguins
Welcome back! I hope you all had an exciting Christmas holiday!
Just like our Autumn term, our Spring term is going to be extremely busy. We still have lots of learning still to master, so it is vital that all the children are supported to complete their reading, times table and spellings daily at home. Not only are these skills important to learn but will coincide with their weekly maths and English homework. Stickers in the children’s homework diaries remind them of their logins and password for valuable online resources such as: TT Roskstars, Active Learn, Purple Mash and Bug club. These websites can be used to practise and consolidate children’s skills across the curriculum but especially with using inference skills during their guided reading.
Our topic this term is A Grecian Odyssey. Within this topic we will be looking at the history of Greece, in particular the achievements of the Ancient Greeks and their influence on western civilisation. We will be comparing and contrasting this period of history with that of a non-European civilisation – the Mayans – which will also give us the opportunity to discover differing physical and human Geography between these two parts of the world. In Science, we will be looking at forces, earth and space where we will be encouraging child-led investigations around the scientists of this time. We will be having a Dad’s open afternoon where we will be able to explore out Greek topic further through design and technology.
In addition to our academic work, there will be lots to look forward to this term. We have our Chinese New Year curriculum week where children will learn about the culture and traditions of China and their new year celebrations. Also, children will participate in A-Life workshops which links to our Learning for Life curriculum and we have class assemblies, workshops and other events of interest. Please see our Year 5 and 6 newsletters for specific details.
We are looking forward to working closely with parents this year. In particular, there is Dad’s open afternoon and parent’s evening. Dad’s (all are welcome – including mums!) will be invited to an open afternoon which we hope to facilitate the learning children do at school and provide you with ideas you can utilise at home. Lastly, there will be another chance to discuss your child’s learning at our second parent’s evening event at the end of the first half term.
I look forward to continue to work with you and your children during this academic year. If you have any concerns or worries about anything at all, please come and chat to me, so that we can work together to resolve the problem.
Wishing you and your children a great second term in Year 5!
