Hello from teachers - https://youtu.be/WAe2c56w8RM
Welcome back! I hope you all had an exciting Christmas holiday!
Our topic this term is A Grecian Odyssey. Within this topic we will be looking at the history of Greece, in particular the achievements of the Ancient Greeks and their influence on western civilisation. We will be comparing and contrasting this period of history with that of a non-European civilisation – the Mayans. As part of our English, we will be looking at the text ‘Who let the Gods out’ to link to our work on Ancient Greece. We will also explore Greek Myths and biographies of famous people from the time period. We will continue to focus on formal grammar terms and recapping all the children’s grammar, punctuation and spelling (GPS) knowledge in readiness for our mock SATS week in March.
Maths this term will focus on the children’s knowledge of shapes and their fluency when using the four operations - including further practice of formal methods of multiplication and division. As always, we are focussing on problem-solving and reasoning within all of our Maths topics.
In Science, we will be looking at Animals, including humans- learning all about the human body and how to live a healthy lifestyle. We will also be learning about Animals and their habitats- understanding how animals are grouped into different categories.
The first two weeks back after Christmas will be Writing Week. This year’s theme is all about saving out planet and the effects of climate change. We are going to be researching about Greta Thunberg and reading the book, Greta and the Giants. From this, we are going to creating persuasive speeches about how we need to help prevent global warming from continuing to destroy our planet.
In addition to our academic work, we are going to continue to focus on the importance of mental health. We will continue to enjoy our weekly well- being time every Friday where we look at one of the five ways to wellbeing and we will celebrate the importance further in Children’s Mental Health Week in February.
We will be continuing to prepare the children for the end of year assessment (SATS) and we will be holding a mock SATs week in March. There will be further details about this close to the time.
Please continue to use our class email addresses during this time when we are unable to meet face to face (email@example.com; firstname.lastname@example.org; email@example.com) .We appreciate all that you are doing to help us stay safe and follow the rules during drop off and pick up.
Wishing you and your children a great second term in Year 6.
